How thick is the wood?

The sides of the saunas are 5 to 7 mm thick. The thickness of the wood is not of great importance as the main concern in looking at the wood material is the quality of material. Blackstone Saunas uses only the highest grade wood in all our saunas. TOP

What types of heaters are in your saunas?

We have double insulated ceramic heaters and carbon fibre heaters. The benefits between the two heaters are that the carbon fibre heat the sauna at a slightly faster rate and provide an even distribution of infrared heat to the individuals in the sauna. Ceramic heaters provide the same benefits as carbon fibre, but are less expensive in price. Ceramic heaters add the benefit of 'spot' heating, but we caution over placing body items too close to any heaters for extended periods of time. Our heaters, whether ceramic or carbon fibre, are placed strategically in the sauna to provide maximum benefit to the user along with ensuring safety. TOP

What type of wood is the sauna constructed of?

The inside and outside of each sauna is constructed of 100 % Canadian Fir. The cost of the same sauna in Cedar is 25 to 30 % more.  While we carry predominately Canadian Fir, Cedar is available upon special order.  Wood used in construction of our products is finished without spraying of pesticides and is not fumigated by customs or shipping officials.  Fumigation with pesticides in products packaged in wood takes place in many countries before items are shipped internationally.  Blackstone Saunas does NOT use any wood packing for any of our products during shipping.  We receive a certificate of packing with every order stating that no wood is used in the packaging of our products.    TOP

What is your warranty?

Lifetime limited warranty on heaters

Lifetime limited warranty on electronics and controls

Lifetime limited warranty on cabinet

One-year limited warranty on stereo

(Manufacture shipping charge is $29.95 for all replacement parts.) Please see warranty page for more information. TOP

Where are the saunas made?

Our saunas are made by Blackstone Saunas, which is a Canadian based company. Canadian Fir is exported from Canada to our factory located in Shenzhen, China where the sauna pieces are manufactured and inspected then sent back to our company in Qualicum or North Vancouver where they are assembled. Many companies claim that their saunas are manufactured in Canada or the United States, please be aware of companies making this claim as most pre-assembled and internet sites purchase their saunas from Chinese Companies. Although there are some smaller cottage companies that build their own saunas, the infrared kits all come from Chinese manufacturers. TOP

What is the difference between an Infrared Sauna compared to a traditional steam sauna?

Traditional steam or hot rock saunas heat only the air around them and at high temperatures between 150-235° F. An Infrared Sauna produces infrared waves at lower temperatures that penetrate the skin to approximately 1.5" or 3.81cm, increasing the body's temperature internally and more quickly than merely sitting in a hot environment. TOP

How long is the wavelength of the infrared heat produced by the heaters?

A far infrared wave generates a long spectrum of microns ranging from 5.6 microns to 1000 microns. All far infrared saunas produce these wavelengths. The micron length of 9.4, which is the optimal length for cellular vibration and detoxifying, is included in the far infrared spectrum. That is why they have far infrared heaters and not medium infrared or near infrared heaters. TOP

Scientific Questions

FAQs – Scientific Questions

Here's a general caution:  Science misconceptions abound in your daily life.  Scientific terms are often used and explained in ways that are incorrect or presented as partial truths.  I highly encourage you to be skeptical of what you read, what you hear, and ultimately, what you believe about any scientific topic.  Just because you read it on the Internet or watch it on television, or hear it spoken of at the local coffee shop, does not mean it is scientifically grounded and correct.  When something doesn’t make sense to you, check it out for yourself.  When searching for information on a given topic, please go to reliable sources such as peer reviewed scientific journals, or find a current college textbook (current as in within the last five years).  Reader’s Digest makes a wonderful series called “How Science Works” that provides simple explanations of most topics with vivid diagrams and illustrations along with short experimental activities that help you understand a given topic.  Do not be swayed by scare tactics propagated by media sources or other Internet sites that produce fear in your life.  Science is a process, not a method; it develops over time with theories, principles, and scientific laws (such as the law of gravity).  Observe closely, search diligently, and use common sense in your decision making process.

VOC – Volatile Organic Compounds and Infrared Saunas
When large amounts of volatile organic materials are burned the resulting precipitate from this burning is what is dangerous to the atmosphere (hydrocarbons).  Carbon Fibre Infrared Saunas neither produce nor burn carbon or any other volatile compound in the heating process.  Carbon Fibre Infrared heaters use a carbon based filter through which low electric current passes to produce an infrared wave.  There is no use of any volatile material nor is there any release of aldehydes, ketones, or hydrocarbons in the form of precipitates into the air.

EMF – Electromagnetic Field and Infrared Saunas
Infrared waves are part of the electromagnetic spectrum produced by the sun or any significant method of burning or other production method (such as electrical power).  Infrared waves are on the low end of the spectrum where the wavelengths are long and less intense.  Infrared waves are just below those of visible light.  They are “gentle” waves that give off heat.  Electromagnetic waves that are dangerous to humans, plants, and animals are those in the upper end of the spectrum, such as ultraviolet, x-rays, and microwaves.  The wavelength is closer or tighter and more intense.  Any of these wavelengths in moderation are generally safe to humans, plants, and animals; it is with prolonged exposure that damage occurs.  Electromagnetic fields in areas of high frequency and intensity (such as around high voltage power lines) are dangerous.  Infrared Saunas produce only the gentle long waves of the electromagnetic spectrum.  They do not produce EMFs in any significant amount.  You would receive more EMFs to your body from watching television or by using your microwave than you would ever receive from your Infrared Sauna.

Wood Fumigation
Fumigation with pesticides in products packaged in wood takes place in many countries before items are shipped internationally.  Blackstone Saunas does NOT use any wood packing for any of our products.  We receive a certificate of packing with every order stating that no wood is used in the packaging of our products.  Wood used in construction of our products is finished without spraying of pesticides and is not fumigated by customs or shipping officials.

What is the power cost of running a sauna for a month's time?

Blackstone Saunas use 120 Volts and the wattage of each sauna depends on each individual unit. The average hydro use per month is under $10.00/month. TOP

What are the benefits of using an infrared sauna?

How do your saunas compare to other saunas?

Blackstone Saunas are of the highest quality and craftsmanship. Each sauna has 5 to 7 quality inspections during the source of construction. Each sauna has its own serial number for quality and warranty purposes. Sauna windows are tempered glass; there is no plastic in our saunas. Advanced technology of the temperature sensor allows for accurate temperature control. Easy to read control displays allow for temperature readings in both degrees Fahrenheit and degrees Celsius. There is a light finish on the outside of the units for cosmetic purposes, but the entire inside of the sauna is natural. Blackstone Saunas does not use chemical finishes on the inside of their saunas. The units are kiln dried to reduced the signs of cracking and warping of the wood. Our saunas are taller than most other manufactured saunas for comfort and mobility purposes. Blackstone Saunas contain protective cushions on the base of the sauna floor to limit scratching of client's flooring.  TOP
